SOUTH YORKSHIRE FIRE SERVICE PLAN MORE STRIKES
South Yorkshire fire crews will take further strike action after managers refused to withdraw the threat to sack 744 firefighters. The Fire Brigades Union had given the fire authority until 4pm today (Monday 18 January) to withdraw the threat of mass sackings to force through new contracts.

The strike action announced today starts on 27 January at 09.00 and ends on 4 February at 18.00hrs. The action is in addition to a 48 hour strike starting at 09.00hours 24 January and ending at 09.00 hours 26 January which the union announced on Friday.

Fire-fighters from all over the UK are supporting their colleagues from South Yorkshire.

10 Top Tips to keep you and your business safe from fire:
  1. Your fire risk assessment must be reviewed to take account that the fire service may not turn up to fight fires or effect any rescues.
  2. Review your emergency plan to ensure suitable and sufficient measures are implemented should the Fire Service not attend your premises in the event of an incident. Practice your evacuation plan.
  3. Ensure that your staff receive suitable and sufficient fire safety training more frequently due to delayed response times from the fire service.
  4. Ensure that all fire safety measures (alarms, smoke detectors etc..) are maintained by a 3rd party accredited company.
  5. Maintain a high level of housekeeping in the workplace (i.e. hourly checks)
  6. Out of hours - ensure that your business is protected while the building is empty. A system like BT Redcare can inform an ARC (Alarm Receiving Centre) that there is a fire at your premises.
  7. Ensure any hot works are kept to a minimum during the strike periods.
  8. Switch off any equipment that is generally left on stand by mode.
  9. Our experience in the last fire-fighters strikes was that it could take up to 45 minutes to get a fire engine in attendance.
  10. Finally, remember to implement as many fire safety measures at home to keep you and your family safe too.
